“I’m thrilled to see this investment in the Garage Community & Youth Center,” said Sappey, D-Chester. “The center helps families in the community by providing a safe and supportive place for young people after school.

The Garage Community & Youth Center is an after-school and youth development program for middle and high school students in Avondale and Kennett Square. It first opened in the Kennett community in 2001.

In 2021 the band purchased the Avondale site, leaving West Grove. In addition to after-school care, the Avondale site is now becoming an emergency storm shelter with the American Red Cross.

“Parts of Avondale have a history of flooding during storms, so I’m grateful to The Garage for working proactively to help affected families,” Sappey said. “This has been a serious concern for the community for some time, and anything that makes our families safer is important to invest in.”

Funding for the grant was provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Social Services.
