New South Side Youth Center at Evansville YMCA Grand Opening

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – The South Garvin Street YMCA in the Glenwood neighborhood has led the way to celebrate the start of work on its $600,000 youth center project.

Representatives from the YMCA Board of Directors, CenterPoint Energy and various community members gathered to discuss additions to the youth center. These include a community kitchen, community hall and STEM lab.

“It’s important to invest in this community because communities like this are the most deserving,” said Johnathan Pope, president of the YMCA of Southwest Indiana, “and we tend not to see these investments in underserved communities.”

Various representatives from the YMCA and CenterPoint Energy took to the podium before the groundbreaking ceremony to thank those who helped along the way, as well as to praise all the different pieces that had to fall into place to make this project comes to fruition. In progress.

“Despite everything we’ve been through over the past two years, this initiative hasn’t slowed down,” said Brian Hancock, YMCA board member and former participant in its youth programs.

Officials said they were looking to cut the ribbon and unveil the finished project in five months.
