Opening of the Abel Maldonado Youth Center in Santa Maria with winter vacation hours, health protocols in place
SANTA MARIA, California – The Abel Maldonado Youth Community Center in Santa Maria opens with new winter vacation hours starting today.
With local schools now closed due to winter break, the youth center will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays from Monday, December 20 to Wednesday, January. 12.
“We are delighted that winter vacation has arrived,” said Jason Davie, Santa Maria Recreation Supervisor. “Our teens from grades 7 to 12 will be able to come to the Abel Maldonado Youth Center and have a good time. We have a lot that will be available, different activities, different programs.”
The youth center will also be closed for several days during the next holidays, including December 24, 25, 31 and January 1.
To help ensure the health and safety of visitors and staff, a number of protocols related to COVID-19 are in place.
“We make sure our children wear masks at all times and we also have sanitation stations for them to disinfect,” Davie said. “We have a fantastic maintenance team here. They are here most of the day wiping and sanitizing, including our regular staff of recreation managers. If there’s a game going on, as soon as they finish it, that the game is sanitized, the basketballs are sanitized. “
Children are also encouraged to use outdoor areas as much as possible, such as basketball courts.
All safety measures are in accordance with the most recent health guidelines put in place by the Santa Barbara County Public Department.
“The City of Santa Maria follows the most recent guidelines issued by the county,” said Dennis Smitherman, director of recreation services for Santa Maria. “Our guidelines are available on the city’s website for all parents to refer to to ensure their children are safe while they are here.”

The guidelines established by the Recreation and Parks Department include: Participants should refrain from wearing inappropriate clothing. Fighting, drug use, smoking and threats will not be tolerated. Members will respect staff, facilities and guests at all times. All children attending the youth center receive a photo ID card. On their first visit, children will be photographed and given a file to complete and return with a parent’s signature.
A number of fun activities are available for youth center clients.
“We have an entertainment room that has pool tables, foosball, and video arcade games, as well as air hockey,” Davie said. “We have a technology center with computers and printers. A media room where the kids can come in and watch big screen TV with various movies or play music. We have a basketball court and we have a fitness center. full form of weight training and cardiovascular equipment. “
Teens in Grades 7 to 12 are eligible for a free membership.
Plus, the McClelland Street Market, located in the building, offers a variety of hot, prepackaged foods for kids to purchase.
